The John Active Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by KYUK and BCSF to celebrate the life and honor the legacy of Aqumgaciq John Active, a pioneer in native media and a fierce advocate of Yup’ik language and culture. Scholarships from this fund will be awarded to college students with ties to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta with preference given to those studying journalism, indigenous language, multimedia or communications.
For nearly 50 years, Active’s voice was heard on KYUK radio and television, sharing timely translations of news and events into Yup’ik, hosting Yup’ik language radio shows and narrating PSAs on a vast variety of topics.
Anyone who feels that their life has been enriched by having been able to hear John Active’s voice and stories over the airwaves or in-person is invited to contribute to the scholarship fund in his name. Organizations and businesses are also invited to contribute. Together, we can continue Active’s work of encouraging and cultivating interest in indigenous language, journalism, multimedia and communications.
